Manage Apps

Use this article to learn how to create and manage your apps. For each app, you specify the ad formats it will display. And for each format, you define ad units, the ad partners you will mediate for each, setting up your monetization stack of networks. You can also add optional ad experience rules and define optional price groups.

Create an App

You can create an app from two places:

  • From the MoPub Self Serve Home page, by clicking Set up an app at the bottom of the page, as shown:

    MoPub Go Home

  • From the left navigation panel, by clicking Apps and then selecting New app at the bottom of the app drop list, as shown:

    MoPub Go Apps

To create an app:

  1. In the New app page, enter your app’s URL to find it in its store. All of your app’s information is automatically populated in our page, where you can still edit each field.

    MoPub Go New App

  2. Select the ad formats you want to activate in your app. You can change these settings later by navigating to AppsApp settings in the left navigation panel. Each selection automatically populates a unique format entry under your app in the left navigation bar, as shown:

Manage Ad Formats within an App

For each app, you have specified the ad formats you want to show. For each ad format, you can select the ad partners you will mediate, define ad units, set optional ad experience rules, and define optional price groups.

Mediation

You get the best CPMs and fill rates if Marketplace is competing with other networks. To take advantage of mediation, you must first connect to other networks at the account level (meaning that your connections will apply to any of the apps defined under your account). This, you can do by navigating to the Ad partners menu item in the left navigation panel, and following the instructions in our Ad partners article.

Once you have connected to one or more ad networks, you can create your mediation stack for each app-and-ad-format pairing by turning the network instances on and off for each ad format within an app.

  1. In the left panel, navigate to Apps and click on the ad format of your choice. In the ad format’s Mediation page, the ad network partners to which you have already connected are ready for you to activate or deactivate.

    MoPub Self Serve Mediation

  2. Add all your network instances, or requests, to the network. The fields here vary depending on the ad network you’re setting up.

    • Keeping this information unique gives you access to granular network revenue and performance data for unique MoPub ad units. You can use this information to set up your mediation stack with confidence, based on individual ad unit performance. It also enables you to isolate performance issues at the instance level.

    • MoPub Self Serve allows up to ten unique network instances for each network.

Note that Auto CPM is activated on all traditional networks; this will maximize revenue and save you time by automating the task of updating CPMs. Learn more about Auto CPM here.

On MoPub Self Serve, each app-and-ad-format pairing has its own mediation stack. The mediation you set up for each format will run across all ad units that you create for that format in the next tab. Our goal is to make mediation as straightforward and easy as possible while maximizing ad revenue.

Mediation: Groups

Mediation groups enable you to geo-target your traditional network instances by applying pre-configured country groups within MoPub Self Serve.

MoPub Self Serve Mediation Groups

To create a new Mediation Group:

  1. Navigate to the Mediation tab of any app and select Manage Mediation Groups from the Mediation Group drop list on the right.
  2. Click New Mediation Group, add your countries, and name your Mediation Group. Once your Mediation Groups have been created, you can apply them to the desired traditional networks.

To add a Mediation Group to a network:

  1. Navigate to your app and toggle to the Mediation tab.
  2. Click Manage Partners, where you can view all unique instances created for each traditional network, with the option to add the Mediation Group to the country drop list. Once you have selected a Mediation Group for that instance, it will only serve in those countries.

To edit or delete a Mediation Group:

  1. Navigate to the Mediation tab of any app and select Manage Mediation Groups from the Mediation Group drop list on the right.
  2. Click the pencil icon (edit) or trash icon (delete) next to the desired Mediation Group to take action. Your action will update all live Mediation Groups targeted to your network.

To view Mediation Group setup and performance:

  1. Navigate to the desired app and toggle to the Mediation tab.
  2. From the Mediation Group drop list on the top right of the page, select the Mediation Group by which you want to filter. Once selected, the mediation stack will filter to the network instances that have that mediation group applied.

Mediation: Backfill

Backfill campaigns run at the bottom of your mediation stack and fill any request unfilled by your ad partners. Use this tool to ensure that your users never see a blank ad; it’s a great opportunity to run your own promotion.

MoPub Self Serve Mediation Backfill

To create a backfill campaign:

  1. Navigate to the Mediation tab of any app and scroll to the bottom of your mediation stack.
  2. Click New backfill promotion.
  3. Name your campaign and add a click URL and/or an impressions tracking URL if desired.
  4. Select your creative type: Image, HTML/MRAID, or VAST Video. Note that MoPub does not host video or MRAID files; you must upload a tag.
  5. Choose the creative dimensions for your backfill. The creative dimensions should match the ad format type. For images, you must also select the orientation the ad should serve. If you want to run a backfill in both portrait and landscape orientation, select Both.
  6. Upload your creative or tag and click Save creative.

Your backfill campaign is now saved and set to running. To view, edit, or remove the backfill campaign, click the three vertical dots to the right.

Ad Units

An ad unit (some ad networks refer to ad units as placements) is the place and time in your app that the ad displays. Every app must have at least one ad unit. Each ad format you’ve previously activated on your app has a default ad unit already set up for you.

We encourage you to create multiple ad units by clicking New ad unit on the top right corner of each ad format page. The more ad units you create, the more varied will be your users’ ad experience, and the better chances you have of higher fill.

To create a new ad unit:

  1. In the left panel, navigate to Apps and click on the ad format of your choice. The ad format’s Ad units tab displays any ad units defined for this app-and-ad-format pairing so far. Here, you can find the ad unit ID (something you need when you integrate the MoPub SDK). You can also view any ad unit limits you’ve defined, and archive an ad unit.

    MoPub Go Ad Units

  2. Click New ad unit in the upper right corner of the Ad units tab.

  3. In the New [format] ad unit page, select an ad unit name. We’ve included some presets in the drop menu for you to select.

    MoPub Go New Ad Unit

  4. Optionally specify a per-hour or per-day frequency cap.

  5. Optionally adjust the refresh interval. This is the time after which the ad is refreshed with a new ad. For the ad unit shown above, the default is 30 seconds.

Ad Experience

The Ad experience tab is our segments feature displayed at the ad format level. This tab displays any ad experience rules you have created that apply to this unique app-and-ad-format pairing.

MoPub Go Ad Experience

In this page, you can:

  • Enable or disable a rule. Enabling or disabling in this tab only applies the setting to this ad format within this app.

  • Assign rule priority. When multiple rules apply to the same ad unit (ad request), you can assign the ideal priority to execute them. Prioritizing prevents ad serving conflicts should the rules contradict each other. Drag rules up and down to rearrange them by priority; the top rule is executed first, and so on.

    MoPub Go Ad Exp Priority

  • Create a new rule. The ability to create a new rule from this tab is just a convenience. The functionality and granularity of the rule will be the same as if you created it from the SegmentsAd experience rules page. The only difference is that the Create a new ad experience rule page is pre-populated with the app and ad format you’re currently in for your ease, but you can deselect them and start from scratch (or add to them), defining a completely new rule with different apps and ad formats. The rule you create here will also appear on the account-level Ad experience rules page in the Segments section. It will also appear in for any other unique app-and-ad-format pairing to which it applies.

Price Groups

The Price groups tab is our segments feature displayed at the ad format level. This tab displays any price group rules you have created that apply to this unique app-and-ad-format pairing.

In this page, you can:

  • Enable or disable a rule. Enabling or disabling in this tab only applies the setting to the rule for this ad format in this app.

  • Assign rule priority. When multiple price group rules apply to the same ad unit (ad request), you can assign the ideal priority to execute them. Prioritizing prevents ad serving conflicts should the rules contradict each other. Drag rules up and down to rearrange them by priority; the top rule is executed first, and so on.

  • Create a new rule. The ability to create a new price group rule from this tab is just a convenience. The functionality and granularity of the rule will be the same as if you created it from the SegmentsPrice groups page. The only difference is that the Create a new price group page is pre-populated with the app and ad format you’re currently in for your ease, but you can deselect them and start from scratch (or add to them), defining a completely new rule with different apps and ad formats. The rule you create here will also appear on the account-level Price groups page in the Segments section. It will also appear in any other ad format to which it applies.
